Versions and packaging types
Hand soap is a popular everyday hygiene product. Schild Labs manufactures soaps on behalf of other companies and fills them in a wide variety of containers. Soap is an important cleaning agent. It consists of sodium or potassium salts of fatty acids. To produce these, vegetable or animal fats are boiled with a lye. This process is called soap boiling. Glycerine and alkali salt are formed from the fatty acids. Gentler cold saponification processes are also used for natural cosmetics products. For this purpose, manufacturers supplement the usually very high-quality fats with a precisely dosed amount of caustic soda. The fats are intentionally saponified incompletely, resulting in overfatting. The washing effect of the soap comes from its composition of a hydrophilic (water-soluble) and a lipophylic (fat-soluble) ingredient.
When dissolved in water, the fat-soluble particles bind the dirt from your the hands. Modern hand soaps often only contain a small amount of actual soap, to which synthetic washing substances are added. Our service as a contract manufacturer includes the production of hand soaps to customer specifications. There are a wide range of cleaning agents, including liquid soap, industrial soap, glycerine soap, scented soap, soaps made from vegetable oils and classic soaps. For a product like soap, which is used several times a day, its form and packaging play an important role. For example, bar soap for hand washing can be packaged in cardboard or in a film wrapper. For liquid soap, a pump bottle or dispenser is a suitable container. Special hand cleaners are also available in tubes or jars.
Advantages and disadvantages of hand soap
Regularly washing your hands with soap is a simple way to protect against pathogens and possible infections. Hand soap is also inexpensive. It has a moisturising effect and is gentle. The idea that solid soaps damage the skin with their alkaline pH value is actually wrong because the water used for washing usually neutralises the pH. Solid hand soap can have additives such as lavender. Moreover, sustainable soap bars are biodegradable. Manufacturers can create soap products professionally with the help of contract manufacturing and contract filling.
One criticism of solid hand soap is the supposed lack of hygiene when it is used by more than one person, as germs stick to the soap bar after use. Doctors actually consider transmission through soap to be very unlikely in normal cases. Any germs are rinsed off during use. Liquid soaps in pump dispensers are practical and convenient, but they often lack refatting properties, as they are mostly made of synthetic ingredients.
Typical packagings used in contract filling for hand soap
Different types of packaging are available for contract filling of hand soap, depending on the shape, special features and the market the product is aimed at. If the contract manufacturer’s range includes both solid and liquid soap, customers have a wide range of wrappers and containers to choose from. For bars of soap, both cardboard packaging and foil packaging are available. These can be printed with brand names and logos, and special designs are also an option. For natural cosmetics, exterior packaging such as waxed paper or transparent cellophane made of vegetable cellulose, is also used. The packaging is not only for presentation purposes in shops, but also protects the soap during transport. Liquid soap has different requirements for effective packaging because, unlike solid soap, it needs to stored in a container. In addition, the packaging should make it easy for users to dispense the soap in the right quantity. Contract manufacturing and filling offers solutions for soap manufacturers. One type of packaging in particular is used for these soaps: the dispenser bottle. By pressing the pump dispenser, you only need to use one hand to dispense the soap. This type of packaging is suitable for a number of soap solutions: cream soap, foam soap, organic soap, kitchen soap, aroma soap, hand wash lotions and wash emulsions. Since soap dispensers can be opened and refilled, some manufacturers offer refill packs of the same product. A refill pouch has a screw cap and generates less waste than disposing of a still usable dispenser bottle.
Sizes, ingredients and uses of hand soap
As a contract manufacturer, Schild Labs is also involved in the production and packaging of hand soaps. There are different sizes of solid soap available on the market. However, it is important to note that the soap bar should fit comfortably in the hand, which is why the weight of standard soaps is between 100 and 150 grams. Solid soap contains few or no artificial ingredients, which makes it gentle on the skin. Depending on the formulation, colourings, fragrances and preservatives are added. Solid soaps come in the form of body soaps, cream soaps, fragrance-free soaps, coconut soaps and natural soaps. Body care for which solid soap is suitable also includes the hair. In addition, there are solid soaps for cleaning purposes, such as gall soaps and curd soaps.
Products such as hair-washing soap are available in solid form. Contract manufacturing also includes liquid soaps. These solutions have a high water content and contain synthetic surfactants and preservatives. They mainly come in plastic dispenser bottles or in pouches. Common sizes of bottle are 250 ml and 500 ml. Refill packs in a pouch usually also contain 500 ml of liquid soap. Soap from the dispenser is mainly used for body care, whether as cream soap, wash lotion, foam soap or fragrance-free soap for sensitive skin. Thus hand soap in liquid form covers a broad spectrum. We also offer contract filling of formulations for a wide range of skin types.
